Compost for the Garden Soil

The Setouchi Triennale has been held once every three years since 2010. On one of the venue sites, Inujima, there is the Inujima Hoppy Bar. It is open during the exhibition period and serves drinks in relaxing surroundings. It is a great place to take a break while walking around the island looking at art works. The menu includes craft gin from Okayama Prefecture and Hoppy cocktails made with lemons and perilla harvested on the island. The wind coming down from the hill passes gently through the shop.

The Inujima Seirensho Art Museum, located on the island, is a museum that preserves and recreates the remains of a copper smelter. Under the theme of a recycling-oriented society, the facility utilizes materials originating from Inujima, and places as little burden on the surrounding environment as possible. In a similar vein, the Inujima Hoppy Bar is a building that has also been restored and reconstructed under the supervision of architect Kazuyo Sejima.

The garden at the Inujima Hoppy Bar is maintained by the director of the "Inujima Life Garden”. The prunings and weeds from the garden are composted in the garden's compost heap and used as fertilizer for the plants, creating a cycle of life. The Inujima Hoppy Bar is also planning to operate a composting system to turn food waste into fertilizer. The 2022 Setouchi International Art Festival has identified "promotion of efforts toward the realization of a sustainable society" as one of its key initiatives. The Inujima Hoppy Bar will also actively play a part in this effort.
