Remake to Revive

It's easy to throw away things we no longer use or want. But before throwing them away, how about infusing a little creativity and giving them a second chance to serve a purpose? Remade items that have been given a new role will shine in their second life.

In today's society kimonos are rarely worn, but they are very useful as materials for remakes. They are adaptable to various forms. For example, unravel silk that is no longer worn and turn it into a one-piece dress that is cool even in summer. This remake allows you to, once again, enjoy the comfort of pure silk. Japanese kimonos can also be used for coats, dresses, leggings, cushion covers, and pouches, making them highly versatile remake materials. Aloha shirts, which originated in Hawaii, were also remade by Japanese immigrants after unraveling their kimonos. The presence of Japanese patterns on classic aloha shirts is a remnant of this practice. The obi wrapping can be made into tapestries, tote bags, book covers, etc., making full use of their patterns.

There are many possibilities for slightly more extensive remakes. For example, an earthen storehouse, which is cool even in summer, has been converted into a kitchen studio. For storage of cooking utensils, chests from the storehouse were remade into drawers under the cooking table. Slates that had been discarded outside were put on the walls around the wet areas to prevent splashing.

Even if it is not such a large-scale DIY project, how about a smartphone stand made from a fishcake board? A wooden box of somen noodles can be used as a case for accessories or pens. In this way, you will find hints of how to turn everyday items into new tools.

More and more people are using baking soda and citric acid as kitchen detergents. This one is not so much a remake as a practical alternative. For instance, handmade bath bombs made from baking soda. A bath bomb is a bubbling bath salt that spurts out fine bubbles when added to a bath. You can easily make this at home. The ingredients are baking soda, citric acid, salt, coloring, essential oil, and so on. Mix the ingredients well, moisten with a mist, squeeze tightly to shape, and let dry for a few days. When it is ready, throw it into the bathtub when taking a bath, you can enjoy the bubbles. Carbonated baths with bath bombs not only remove dirt from the skin, but the carbonation is said to have the effect of beautifying the skin and promoting blood circulation. Regardless, it is an enjoyable bathing experience.
