2017年1月のカレンダーを手がけたのは、イギリス在住のアーティストでイラストレーターのミシェル・トンプソン。ミュージシャンのCDジャケットや著名人の書籍カバーをはじめ、リーボックやBBC、ロイヤルメールの商業広告など、幅広いクライアントに作品を提供する。書籍や雑誌、葉書、写真のスクラップをコラージュして描き塗る作風で知られ、デジタル加工よりも手作業での制作に重きを置く異色の存在。今作では、アートディレクターのFuko Chubachi氏とコラボレーションしながら、2017年「酉年」にちなんで紅白を基調に「鶏」「富士と初日の出」「しめ飾り」「駒」「門松」などの模様を散りばめ、新年の幕開けである１月にぴったりな、おめでたさ溢れる１枚に仕上げた。
Michelle Thompson, an artist based in Saffron Walden, England. Michelle’s work combines found materials （books, magazines, packaging, photographs, postcards and other printed ephemera） with painted, drawn and printed elements. Her work alludes to shared memory – cutting-up and re-assembling images from recent history, to reflect contemporary themes and popular culture. She works using a combination of traditional collage techniques and digital technology. Collaborating with Fuko Chubachi, the art director of this project, she made the calendar with Japanese traditional patterns which present the New Year’s celebration, like Mount Fuji, the rising sun, “Koma” – a Japanese traditional spinning top, pine decorations, and The Year of the Rooster 2017.
